Andrew Sullivan weighs in with a quotation from the Greenwald post I quoted earlier, followed by:
Andrew Cohen notes the president's important qualification, before his legitimate discussion of a political issue:
With all due deference to separation of powers ...
In contrast, I think Gordon Smith had the right take on that bit of Presidential throat-clearing:
"With all due deference to separation of powers ..."
This sounds like the Presidential equivalent to a Southerner saying, "Bless his soul ...," right before calling someone a raving lunatic.
Except, with all due deference, I think the correct Southern expression is Bless Your Heart or some variation thereof:

One time at a hearing in which the judge wasn't getting my point, I said: "Your Honor, I hate to use the phrase, 'with all due respect,' but...."
Judge: "I usually duck when I hear it."
