Despite the fact that I'm a stalwart conservative, I try not to pull my punches when somebody on my side of the aisle does something annoying or stupid.[1]
Case in point: House Speaker Dennis Hastert:
It makes no sense to spend billions of dollars to rebuild a city that's seven feet under sea level, House Speaker Dennis Hastert said of federal assistance for hurricane-devastated New Orleans. (Link)
Let's think about that a minute. Illinois is in the northern heart of Tornado Alley. Yet, can you imagine Hastert telling residents of his state not to rebuild their towns after a tornado? Would he tell those of us in LA or SF not to rebuild after an earthquake? (Come to think of it, however, we are in a blue state....) Why not "conserve" what's left and rebuild the rest of NOLA better and stronger?
[1] Subject to the usual caveats about this not being a newspaper. And, of course, I get to define what is annoying or stupid, a question on which your mileage may vary.
