CE Petit sent me a link to a story that George RR Martin's Song of Fire and Ice fantasy series will be made into a HBO series. There'll apparently been one season for each novel. Cool. I'm a big fan of Martins' series and of many of the HBO TV series (isn't great that Rome's back? and who else can't wait for the Sopranos to come back?). But the story also contains this depressing note:
Martin has nearly finished the fifth installment, but won't complete the seven-book cycle until 2011.
2011? Is there anybody since Tolkien who wrote more slowly than Martin? Worse yet, Martin's 58 years old. Let's hope he stays in good shape. Too many sci fi and fantasy authors have shuffled off this mortal coil with series unfinished.
