With his A Song of Ice and Fire series, George RR Martin is establishing himself as a master of medieval science fiction. Appropriately enough, it turns out he's writing the series on what amounts to medieval technology:
Windows sucks. I use it, under protest, for the internet, but all my fiction is written on a DOS machine, using WordStar 4.0. I'm a word guy. When I want to copy something, I like to type "copy." When I want to delete it, I like to type "delete." I don't like puzzling out these stupid little cartoons they call icons, or dragging them around with a mouse. The day WordStar 4.0 stops working is the day I retire.
I didn't even know anybody still made DOS machines. Or is he using some old 486 machine? In either case, those of us who are fans of the series but annoyed at how long it's taking him to write the [expletive deleted] books now have two things to worry about. We've worried for a while that he might ... well, you know, go to that great Wall in the sky. Now we have to worry about his reliance on antiquated technology too. Grump, grump.
